York Timbers
South Africa – Escarpment region, Mpumalanga province
36,700 hectares - Completed January, 2024
Tesera developed a High Resolution Inventory Solution (HRIS) for York Timbers Holdings Limited (York Timbers).
As the largest privately-owned integrated forest products business in South Africa, York Timbers supplies domestic customers and international markets with biomass for energy production, as well as lumber, plywood and remanufactured value-added wood products.
York Timbers is developing a new forest inventory database for its privately owned FSC Certified and sustainably managed pine forest plantations, located in the Escarpment region in the province of Mpumalanga, South Africa. The Escarpment region is generally characterized as being of lower elevation with variable terrain. These pine plantations are managed primarily for sawtimber, with a rotation age of between 18 to 25 years.
The new forest inventory covers an area of interest (AOI) of 36,701 hectares, situated in the eastern Escarpment region. The HRIS inventory contains almost 190,000 reporting units, having an average size of 0.2 hectares.
Tesera delivered a geodatabase that will significantly improve the resolution and accuracy of York Timber’s plantation, stand and tree level attribute data. These improvements will also enable the development of sustainable forest management plans and activities, optimize harvest scheduling plans and activities, as well as support wood supply chain needs and requirements.
“York Timbers worked with Tesera on our HRIS forest inventory projects, including assisting us with data specifications, project management and data quality. Tesera also processed LiDAR and ground truthing data to be able to calibrate stand and microstand level calibrations. We have been very happy with their service and would highly recommend them."
