MRAT

Tesera was retained to design, build, and implement the Municipal Risk Assessment Tool (MRAT) - a climate risk management technology to help reduce basement flooding and insurance claims, and prioritize improvements to municipal infrastructure.

March 30, 2016 - Insurance Bureau of Canada and Tesera Systems Inc. announce Transfer Agreement for the Municipal Risk Assessment Tool

The MRAT is the only one of its kind in the world. MRAT redefines the relationship between municipalities and insurers, making it one of collaboration and common cause.
— -Don Forgeron, President and CEO, Insurance Bureau of Canada

The Challenge

Insured losses from natural disasters in 2013, including floods in Alberta and Toronto were at least $2.5 billion, the highest in Canadian history partially as a result of changing climate.

The Solution

Working with our project partners and stakeholders and leveraging the latest spatial and machine learning analysis techniques, MRAT predicts sewer infrastructure risk and vulnerabilities now and in the future.

The Results

MRAT makes it possible for municipalities to assess and plan infrastructure improvements that will decrease basement flooding, reduce insurance claims - saving hundreds of millions for Canadian homeowners and insurers, governments and municipalities.
