The Challenge

Cenovus needs to ensure the access routes to its facilities are safe, comply with regulatory requirements and have a minimal environmental footprint. Operational field staff and contractors were reporting their movements and observations using paper maps and forms.

The Solution

The Access Management App can be used on any tablet device to easily and accurately track and report routes and observations from Cenovus employees and its contractors. The app enables office and field staff to easily share custom maps and data, and improve visibility to time sensitive information.

The Results

Cenovus is better managing its access footprint and demonstrating its commitment to being a responsible operator and environmental land steward. The app could eventually be used for regional well inspections, hazard reporting and rangeland health assessments.

The Challenge

GEMS recognized a significant and growing market opportunity to provide organizations deploying rig mats in remote locations with more accurate and timely asset and inventory tracking information. Current industry practices involve manually counting up to 10,000 mats at a single job site which often result in inaccurate billing and productivity inefficiencies.

The Solution

Tesera, collaborating with sensor and hardware experts at SensorUp developed a new innovative web/mobile application. The technology is integrated with RFID and GPS-tags embedded into the wooden mat. The solution provides a dashboard that allows GEMS (and its clients) to accurately track and manage the location and condition of its mats on a near real-time basis. Simplicity, scalability and durability in the design and user interface were a priority for the project.

The Result

GEMS is the first company in the world to offer SmartMats with web/mobile-based location-tracking systems integrated into the rig mat. GEMS was also the award winner at the 2015 RFID Live Start UP Competition in San Diego. The integration of these web-enabled technologies and approaches will support new collaborative and data-centric ways of decision-making that will improve GEM’s business productivity and environmental outcomes – across a class of different clients and projects.

The Challenge

Avalanche Canada required a fully integrated web and mobile-based application that would be accessible to a diverse cross-section of user groups and stakeholders whose skill level with information and communications technology varied greatly. Simplicity in the design and user interface combined with high technological standards and innovative tools were key priorities for this project. A rapid 3 month implementation timeline and the requirement for a scalable system capable of handling high numbers of users were added considerations.

The Solution

Tesera designed and developed a modern application framework using Amazon Web Services, Mapbox and Prismic. The primary APIs are backed by Dynamo DB and S3 enabling rapid scaling. The application layer and REST endpoints are Node.js served by Elastic Beanstalk, configured in a scale-out pattern. A common component set was developed to expedite the inclusion of Forecasts, Mapping and Mountain Information Network components in a web and mobile application. The web client application was developed primarily in AngularJS to provide a modern user experience. The mobile client application was developed using Ionic Framework, AngularJS, and Phonegap to provide a native like app experience that is available to iOS and Android. The application is capable of managing up to 250,000 daily pageviews.

The Result

Members have 24/7 access to an intuitive, interactive mobile and web map interface that is integrated with APIs providing Avalanche Forecasts and access to the Mountain Information Network where users can share conditions, images, weather, snowpack and avalanche data. The net result is better information for users and forecasters to leverage to improve avalanche planning and decision-making based on more timely and reliable observations.

The Challenge

While changing climate is creating challenges for the agriculture industry, there are significant opportunities to increase Canada’s role as a secure and preferred global supplier of agricultural products and services.

The Solution

Tesera, collaborating with researchers at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, has shown that regional scale changes in agricultural land use in the Canadian Prairies can modify regional climate and its variability. Certain agriculture land use management practices may help to mitigate the effects of climate change.

The Result

Our work led to a scientific paper entitled Determining the Influence of Agricultural Land Use on Climate Variables for the Canadian Prairies, published by the International Journal of Climatology (2014).

The Challenge

Municipalities need an effective tool for updating provincial Alberta cadastral data (boundaries and ownership of land parcels) to reflect their current records and information. Existing methods can be tedious, time-consuming, and do not easily integrate GIS-based rules.

The Solution

Tesera created a series of FME Workbenches for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo that makes the entire cadastral data updating process more efficient. The process eliminates the need for visual inspections, manual data creation and attribution, removes duplicate owners, merges multi-record owner names and addresses, and generates a record for every title parcel.

The Result

The Cadastral Data Updater provides Wood Buffalo with an efficient, easy-to-use, interface for managing its cadastral data records. The application could be used to enhance and manage cadastral data for other municipalities and organizations.

A robust and scalable database to expedite and coordinate the development of a recognized, secure and well-funded forest growth and yield sector.

 

The Challenge

The Forest Growth Organization of Western Canada (FGrOW) plays a lead role in growth and yield research, and related policy development in Western Canada. FGrOW required new tools to collaborate and share data with members and other supporting organizations.

The Solution

Tesera worked with FGrOW to build an innovative web-based solution that pools FGrOW member data into an association-wide database that supports the development and validation of forestry growth models. The new solution provides data uploading and validation capabilities, supports GY protocols and standards, and allows members to easily generate reports and export data.

The Result

The permanent sample plot database provides FGrOW with a robust and scalable application. It allows members to easily store, search and share data, while also accommodating advanced analytics and the future information and knowledge requirements of FGrOW members.

Current approaches for developing forestry, natural resource and environmental inventories are labor-intensive, subjective, inaccurate and not easily replicated. Spray Lake Sawmills needed precise, high resolution inventory data to support sustainable forestry, land use and environmental decision-making on an operational, tactical and strategic basis.

The Solution

HRIS uses advanced predictive analytics to reduce the cost and dramatically speed up the production of highly accurate natural resource inventory attributes and maps. HRIS empowers users to explore more types of inventory analyses (what if) and produces results that are more timely, realistic and reliable.

The Results

High resolution maps and detailed datasets of forestry, vegetation, hydrological and other environmental resources allowed SLS decision-makers to better understand available inventories, optimize their production and supply chains, while minimizing their planning and operational costs and environmental footprint.

Insured losses from natural disasters in 2013, including floods in Alberta and Toronto were at least $2.5 billion, the highest in Canadian history partially as a result of changing climate.

The Solution

Working with our project partners and stakeholders and leveraging the latest spatial and machine learning analysis techniques, MRAT predicts sewer infrastructure risk and vulnerabilities now and in the future.

The Results

MRAT makes it possible for municipalities to assess and plan infrastructure improvements that will decrease basement flooding, reduce insurance claims - saving hundreds of millions for Canadian homeowners and insurers, governments and municipalities.

The Challenge

Providing staff and users with new and innovative GIS-based services are core goals of a modern municipality. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) faced a challenging information system migration from GeoMedia to an ESRI-based system, while also having to manage the complex daily operations of a fast growing municipality.

The Solution

Tesera worked closely with RMWB on the project to provide assessment, direction and GIS support services. The new enterprise information systems implemented by RMWB were supported by Tesera’s efforts in building the outward facing services and web applications. The resulting Municipal Viewer provides a robust and intuitive web-map viewer that enables access to available data and other collaboration functions including a custom designed “Share Map” tool.

The Result

The Municipal Viewer provides a lightweight and scalable web app and GIS-based viewing platform. Users can begin with a tour of the app or jump right into using its features and tools. Whether it’s annotating and sharing a planned municipal project, or accessing Pictometry’s impressive high-resolution oblique imagery, the RMWB Municipal Viewer has been well received.

A major urban core redevelopment and revitalization effort “City Centre McMurray” is underway. A new interactive GIS tool was needed to provide investors and developers with greater visibility and access to information on properties and relevant catalyst projects and redevelopment efforts taking place within the city core.

The Solution

Using the latest in capabilities of ArcGIS Server and AngularJS, Tesera developed a site selector map tool that delivers a quality user experience on web and tablets and engages investors in Fort McMurray's redevelopment process. Investors and developers now have the ability to easily search and filter property information according to attribute criteria, as well as identify parcels of interest.

The Challenge

The Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment, EcoSystem Indicator Partnership (ESIP) was looking for a mobile application to allow visitors to share photos and experiences that they had while touring the area. Overtime these photos could be used to monitor environmental changes in the area.

The Solution

A mobile App that allows users to upload geo-referenced and time stamped images and comments from sites within the Gulf of Maine to an on-line ESIP photo library. This application needed to work on a variety of mobile devices. The App is designed with the flexibility to easily scale and grow as monitoring requirements evolve and expand.

The Result

The Result was a robust and simple to use app that works on Android and iOS devices. The app links users in the Gulf of Maine and associated watersheds with information on local monitoring sites in the vicinity. Users can become watershed monitors and environmental stewards by submitting photos and comments on specific locations from across the region.

The Challenge

To provide communities and decision-makers at multiple levels across the Mackenzie River Basin with access to the information they need to make sustainable freshwater management decisions.

The Solution

Tesera, collaborating with the Gordon Foundation and the Government of the Northwest Territories developed an innovative open source web-based data platform that ensures communities engaged in local water monitoring and stewardship programs have access to timely and meaningful information about the health of these waters. Mackenzie DataStream is designed with the flexibility to easily scale and incorporate a wide variety of datasets.

The Result

Users can access, visualize, and download water quality datasets collected by 22 communities, as part of the NWT-wide Community-Based Monitoring program. Through this program, community members monitor dissolved metals, turbidity, temperature, chlorophyll-a, as well as oil and gas chemicals (hydrocarbons). Moving forward in Phase II, Mackenzie DataStream will incorporate datasets collected by other groups in the Mackenzie River Basin.

On May 3, 2016, a wildfire began southwest of Fort McMurray, Alberta. The fire spread across almost 590,000 hectares, destroying approximately 2,400 homes and buildings and forcing the largest wildfire evacuation in Albertan history.

 

The Challenge

With residents still evacuated and unable to return to their homes, the immediate need was to understand the extent of the fire damage. Evacuees wanted to know the condition and status of their homes and community. More importantly, they wanted to see the state of their properties for themselves.

We anticipated initial high demand for the tool, and designed FireMap to handle near infinite scale. The application design was kept simple and serverless to ensure a rapid response.

The Solution

FireMap is an agile, open source, cloud-enabled tool. It was created by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, Tesera Systems, Pictometry and Better.

Acquiring up-to-date data was an immediate requirement. The project team quickly mobilized, and got planes in the air to collect oblique imagery. Tesera began to create the FireMap viewer and the Fire Reporting tool, using the imagery that provided homeowners with the capability to assess the potential impacts of the wildfire on their homes.

The solution leveraged Amazon Web Services, CloudSearch and API Gateway to create an extremely responsive and flexible API address lookup.

The Result

The Fire Assessment Tool went from concept to implementation within seven days. Homeowners have access to a FireMap featuring a split panel display enabling an assessment of fire damage (2015 pre-fire imagery vs. 2016 post-fire imagery).

Residents are able to easily access the Fire Report tool, which includes 2015 vs. 2016 side by side oblique aerial images (i.e., North, East, South, West and Overhead views). This enables a detailed visual assessment of the condition of properties. Tesera added a place for notes and important contacts to help residents get started with an insurance claim process, if necessary.

The Community-University Research Alliance (CURA H2O) needed a web-based solution to enable citizen science and engage stakeholders in monitoring the health of local watersheds and share water quality data on a global basis.

The result is an intuitive web app that allows the CURA H2O team to manage and share standardized water quality data collected by stewardship partners across Atlantic Canada and internationally.
